Gadgets & technology - are they really making our lives easier?

Q) In a society that relies heavily on gadgets and new technology, are all these items really making our lives easier or more difficult? The demand on the Earth's resources is getting bigger and bigger - do we really need new mobile phones every year, new TV's, new PC's? Should items be designed to last as long as possible to minimise how much energy we put into making them?

A) They make our lives easier but at the same time make us lazy. Why learn math when a calculator will do it for you. Why learn to spell when few really write anymore. Why learn to cook when all you have to do is pop a frozen meal in a microwave. I could go on and on. Why worry about the environment when we have enough for the now generation. Why make a product that will last for years when people are willing to buy something new every year because they get bored with the old, or feel the need to keep up with what the neighbours have bought. We are a materialistic country ( not just us) Values and forthought are becoming a thing of the past. I really do think we are losing more than we are gaining.

Gadgets for your house?

Q) I was in a house the other day and a guy had a stsyem which he could control most of his lights etc with his mobile phone via text. Has anyone come accross this? can you post the websites and let me know of any other cool house gadgets you have come accross.

A) thats nothing special, you could build that with an sms gateway such as o2 online, a quick web parser to output on the parallel port to a relay card http://www.oceancontrols.com.au/controllers/parallel_relay_k074.htm total time to build about 1 hour (but they you got to wire in the wall lights, that may need a bit of decorating :) )

Gadgets that cut standby waste - useful or just even more rubbish?

Q) I've notice in the news recently gagets to stop standby waste when electrical products are left on standby. Are people so stupid that they can't realise just how much more damaging these products are to the environment? Lets take a modern TV for example. Most modern products consume very little power in standby mode. My TV consumes less than 5W/h in standby. I've calculated this costs around £4 worth of electricity to keep it on standby for a whole year. Now these "standby" saver gadgets costs around £10. Plus, they've used up lots of resources during manufacture - PCB manufacture, electronic components, labour, processing, packaging for market, etc. etc. all of which use processes that are damaging in some way - I think £4 worth of electricity is far for environmentally friendly personally. Care to comment? For ref, the £4 was calculated as follows:- Assuming a 9p per kW/h average elec. cost 5W = 0.005 kW/h and there are 8760 hours per year Therefore 8760 x 0.005 = 43.8 kW/h total consumption in one year 43.8 x £0.09 = £3.94

A) It doesn't matter what we do the damage allready caused by the human race will never be fixed the world is comming to a grusome end that is fact look at all the floods this time next year most of london will be under water we are going to lose everything i read on a site that britain will no longer have electricity by 2010 that's only three years away the damage to the planet is unrepairable and we have only got ourselves to blame for this disaster.

A) watch out, you're standing on the brink, you may fall in...and it's a very expensive drop... I know, I've been there... A question about Vista Sidebar gadgets?

Q) I have Vista Ultimate and am using the sidebar with all the gadgets. I went online (at the official microsoft site) and downloaded some more gadgets, but I don't know how to start using them. Some I saved, some I just said "Open with ...", I'm not exactly sure what it was. Anyway, if I click the plus on the sidebar to add gadgets, it does not display the gadgets I just downloaded. Also, there is not option (at least none that I see) that will allow me to browse a gadget from my computer. How is this supposed to work?

Gadgets/ Stronger bits?

Q) Why do I look at people's answers to questions and see TONS of answers that involve using a gadget or stronger bit to fix what is very obviously a training problem? Why doesn't anybody want to really spend the time to fix the problem instead of mask the solution? Am I the only person in the world that feels like this? So your horse rushes... go buy a stronger bit and just keep getting stronger until he gives up? No thanks... eventually you'll just deaden his mouth to everything and he'll hate you. What is everyone's opinion on the use of gadgets (ie martingales, strong bits, certain types nosebands, spurs, crops even breastplates and cruppers to fix saddle fitting problems)? As for breastcollars and cruppers I wasn't refering to them in use for a specific activity... nor was I for any of the other gadgets either. I was refering to them in the sense of being used everyday for normal work. I personally believe that if you are doing normal w/t/c in a flat arena and your saddle is sliding it doesn't fit right (and if it doesn't fit right probably sliding around is gonna be the least of your problems). Now cross country or trail riding are different things entirely. Basically I meant how do you feel about people who use "gadgets" as an everyday thing instead of as the situation warrants?

A) I feel like this about dog owners sometimes. They want a perfectly behaved dog, but aren't willing to put any effort into it. They blame the DOG for the problems. Now that I read your question again, I realize it's a seperate issue, but kinda related. Basically, owners are dumb and lazy!

google gadgets-new time new timer?

Q) i had to restore my system recently from startup disks and i got all my google stuff back but there was a timer gadget that you could set up to 2 new times and 2 timers and now when i go to add gadgets it's not listed anywhere

google gadgets help?

gadgets to remove earwax?

A) A half cap of hydrogen peroxide and half water poured in the ear is effective. Lay one one side with that ear facing up. After a minute, put a cotton ball over the ear's opening and roll to the other side to let it drain. Repeat on the other side. No "tools" needed.
